Dr. Anant Madhav Deshpande was born on 3 rd September 1932. He did DA from Mumbai in 1961. He took active interest by working in medical camps at the Koyna earthquake rehabilitation centres during 1962. Later, he went to London to get his DA degree in 1963. During his stay in London he worked under Dr. Magdi Yakub as the Registrar in Hairfield Hospital. Subsequently he secured his MD from Pune University in 1970.

He was the Hon. Professor of Anaesthesia at BJ Medical College Pune and he was instrumental in conducting the ISACON in Pune in 1976 as Organising Chairman. He was Founder President of ISA Maharashtra and continued in this post from 2000-2006. He was also the Chairman, Board of Studies of the University of Pune.

He guided PhD scholars like Dr. Y. V. Suri, Dr. N. P. Singh and Dr. P. F. Kotur among others.

Dr. Deshpande breathed last on 12 th January 2012 after a brief illness. He is survived by Dr. Pushpamala (gynaecologist), two sons Dr. Arvind and Aniruddha and daughter Mrs Swathi Sahastrabuddhe.

Dr. A. M. Deshpande, popularly called Balasaheb, will be remembered for his compassionate heart and an attitude to accept newer challenges. He believed in the best and always strived for the same. He recognised the extra potential in the ordinary people and encouraged them to be par excellence. He inspired hundreds of his students and mentored them to be perfect professionals.
