Ladies and Gentlemen,
It was in the year 1946, the idea to start All India Society of Anaesthetists originated during centenary celebration of Ether Day (16 October 1946) at Bombay. Dr. B.N. Sircar of Bombay did a lot of pioneering work to establish the Society by communicating with all colleagues across India. On 30 December 1947, Indian Society of Anaesthetists (ISA) was born as joint organisation with the Surgical-Obstetric Society of India.
The first All India Annual Conference of ISA was conducted on 23 and 24 December 1949 at Bombay combined with the surgeons and obstetricians conference. In 1965, the ISA conducted its first Independent Annual Conference at Hyderabad under the leadership of Dr. M. Venkata Rao. The Government of India invited Prof. T.C. Gray and Prof. R. Macintosh from the UK as the special invitees for this conference. Today, on this historic day of ISACON 2015-Jaipur, we are already into the 50th year of independent annual conference.
In the year 2000, the idea to limit the new membership only to qualified anaesthesiologists resulted in Indian Society of Anaesthetists (ISA) being renamed as Indian Society of Anaesthesiologists (ISA) (Member of the World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists).
Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam said, 'As a citizen of India, armed with knowledge, technical expertise, and above all a great sense of patriotism for our country, we must realize that small aim is a crime'. As an organisation, we must aim higher and realise our potential and show it to the world.
| Younger Anaesthesiologists|| |
In our first governing council (GC) meeting, it was decided to dedicate this year to the Younger Anaesthesiologists. In this meeting, we envisaged the need of our post-graduate (PG) residents to learn the art of how to interact with patients, with surgeons, with administrator and finally the patient's relatives. ISA also realised that our PG Residents need to be trained in personality development, leadership qualities apart from communication skills, since they are the need of the hour. Accordingly, ISA took a decision to introduce one mandatory talk on communication skills in every ISA sponsored CME so as to make them 'Complete Anaesthesiologists'.

To support homegrown talent and bring in uniformity in the academic activities of ISA across India, we made a small attempt to prepare our own course modules for workshops. The first ever ISA Research Methodology Workshop was held at Kolkata on 5 November 2015, which was well accepted by the members. This was followed by ISA Difficult Airway Workshop at Bangalore on 12 December 2015, inaugurated by Dr. Chakra Rao, the Chairman of Education Committee of ISA.
Inspired by the success of these two workshops, we now propose to conduct high quality and uniform ISA cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) workshops across India from next year during all our ISA activities. We propose to conduct this workshop in association with EMRI.

The Indian Journal of Anaesthesia (IJA) is the official publication of our association, and the past Editors are the real unsung heroes of ISA. Starting from Dr. M.C. Ganguli of Calcutta, IJA has seen 15 editors till this date.
Ever since the first edition of IJA was published in July 1953, it has seen few important milestones. From 1953 to 1957, it was an annual publication for 5 years. It became biannual publication in 1958, quarterly in 1959 and bimonthly in 1982, which continued for the next 33 years until 2014. In the year 2010, there was a qualitative change in the publication standards and IJA entered the prestigious league of PubMed, and simultaneously the online version of IJA was published. From then on, the global visibility of online IJA started soaring to new heights, and now it is getting nearly 70,000–80,000 viewers on its website every month. The present Governing Council (GC) of 2015 in its first meeting approved the historic decision of Editorial board to publish IJA as a 'monthly issue'. Hence, from January 2015, ISA is publishing 12 issues of IJA annually.
After carefully considering the reading choice of the members and efficient financial management, it was decided that from January 2015, IJA will be provided free of cost to all ISA members, who demand and register for the print copy. After giving a free IJA print copy, for the first time, the IJA Editor-in-Chief Dr. S Bala Bhaskar has reported financial savings of almost Rs. 9 Lakhs for the period of January to December 2015. Really, a professional way of handling the affairs of IJA was visible.
To further increase the opportunity for publications, without diluting quality, it was decided to start exclusive zonal journals totally independent of IJA. The Northern Journal of ISA has already published its first issue and inspired by the starting of this journal, the West Zone also has now come forward to start its own journal, which we propose to launch on historic 26 January 2016.
| Revamping of Indian Society of Anaesthesiologists Office|| |
The Father of our Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, had said – 'We must be the change we wish to see'. Today, we need an ISA office of leaders and managers with team spirit, great tolerance and low emotional attachment with a focus on long-term goals. We need the leaders who can set the goals arising out of necessities and also the managers who execute them with precision rather than individual desires because the leadership is all about helping others to succeed. To quote Rosenheim: 'By empowering your colleagues, you increase the total sum of power and as the leader, your own power'.
| Amendments to Constitution (Byelaws)|| |
The ISA constitution required large amendments and a committee was formed during 2014. The recommendations were deliberated during GC meetings, and final decisions are put for the approval of Annual General Body Meeting (AGBM). I wish, through these amendments, the ISA will encourage the leadership, revamp the office and bring in transparency based on the contemporary and futuristic thinking.

The human civilisation has seen three major revolutions. They are (1) agrarian revolution, (2) industrial revolution and (3) knowledge revolution. In this 21st century, a new era of medical practice is emerging. With increased life expectancy, we need to add 'Healthy' life years into geriatric patients by improved health care, alleviation of suffering and the acts of kindness. The concept of services is changing from 'How to handle the diseases to How to handle the patients'. Patients expect and demand 'National Aeronautics and Space Administration like safety' up from 'Airplane type of safety'. Hospital services are shifting from patient-centric care to human-centric care. Careful listening and empathising add value to the treatment given and service we render.
It is true that technology has reinvented the health care practice, and it is now extensively used as health care facilitator. Though the social media such as Facebook, Twitter or WhatsApp are extremely useful, they need to be complemented with human commitment if we have to utilise them effectively. Use technology to its best, for the benefit of mankind and provide an India-centric service.
Let me assure, all the honoured members assembled here that ISA is constantly working to live up to the expectations of its members and the needs of the countrymen.
