Dear Colleagues,

First of all, let me express my gratitude for electing me for the most prestigious and responsible post of President of Indian Society of Anaesthesiologists (ISA) and making me occupy the Chair at Jaipur on 29th December 2015 during the National Conference of ISA. I really feel it as a proud moment as ours is a Professional Organisation with a membership strength of around 10,000 active members, including Associate Life members. My immediate Past Presidents Dr. Harsoor S S and Dr. Chakra Rao have initiated a lot of measures for the qualitative growth of younger anaesthesiologists and my wish is to fulfil those commitments during my tenure as President.

The ICA was established with the approval of ISA nearly a decade ago and has shown some progress in Education, Academics and Research and as the General Body of ISA has permitted 1 year time to create a good platform for the growth of ICA under the guidance of ISA and I wish to fulfil that task with my best efforts so that the Society can progress in both academic and research directions. I appreciate the efforts of ICA in conducting regular annual conferences and also for publishing the “Year Book of Anaesthesia” regularly for the past 5 years. I also wish to take special care in promoting the Family Benevolent Fund (FBF) scheme of ISA being managed by the dynamic Secretary Dr. Sugu Verghese under the chairmanship of Dr. J. Ranganathan, the past President of ISA. We should all put our best efforts until it reaches the 5000 mark membership and I need the co-operation of all our Council members, the Presidents and Secretaries of the various metro, state and city branches to fulfil this dream. Special awards will be given for those who help in this membership drive for FBF. The scheme can flourish very well if many young anaesthesiologists join, and one should feel the happiness of supporting the family members of the deceased anaesthesiologist with considerable money.

The ISA is giving the grant for conducting the CMEs by the various City branches across India and as pointed out by my immediate past President, the 'hands-on workshops' are becoming more popular than the CME lectures excepting those which are Post-graduate Examination oriented, and I wish to promote the conduct of more workshops during this year. I also wish to take special interest on the legitimate and justified remuneration for the anaesthesiologists as most of the young anaesthesiologists are suffering with a small percentage of remuneration of the surgeons charges, and I need the co-operation from all the state and city branches to fulfil this task. This was initiated by our past President Dr. Chakra Rao but the response from the branches has not been up to the mark so far.

It is time for us to impart the knowledge on resuscitation and basic life support to the Medical Students of all Medical Colleges across the country through our ISA so that the awareness of the speciality of anaesthesiology will be created in the undergraduate career itself. I am extremely happy to mention that our Editor-in-Chief of IJA, Dr. Bala Bhaskar S along with his dynamic team of Associate Editors, Advisors, Section Editors and Editorial board members is doing a great job in making the Journal a monthly issue, printing the hard copies for institutions and for interested members of ISA free of cost on request.

I am glad that the General Body at Jaipur accepted for a large number of amendments of our ISA Constitution for which the efforts taken by our past President Dr. Chakra Rao along with the entire Governing Council of ISA is highly appreciable as much progress can be expected with these amendments. I am confident that the entire Governing Council will be with me for the progress of our Society. Significant number of members have not updated their details in the ISA database; I appeal to all members to update their details online so that communications become easy and more numbers can participate in online elections.

I wish you all good luck, a healthy and prosperous New Year and Sankranthi, the festival of joy and happiness. Thank you once again for electing me as National President of ISA 2016.

Long Live ISA.
