With a deep sense of regret, we wish to inform the following sad news from the Indian Society of Anaesthesiologists (HQ):
"A lady anaesthesiologist, Dr. (Mrs.) Sethulakshmi, aged about 55 years, having a D.A. degree and working as a senior civil surgeon in ESI Hospital, Tuticorin (Thoothukudi), Tamil Nadu, owned a nursing home. A patient with pregnancy-induced hypertension (8 months' amenorrhoea) with a history of intrauterine death of foetus was admitted on 31 December 2011. She had undergone hysterotomy under spinal anaesthesia and, intra-operatively, developed pulmonary oedema and was intubated and shifted to another hospital with assisted ventilation. Unfortunately, the patient died on the way.

Mr. Mahesh (28), husband of the deceased, was alleged to have threatened Dr. Sethulakshmi with consequences, which was brushed aside by the doctor. On the night of 3 January 2012, around 10 PM, the doctor finished her routine work in the nursing home and retired to bed. A woman under the disguise of a patient (alleged to be arranged by the husband of the deceased) knocked the doors of the doctor at 10.30 PM. While the doctor opened the door, Mr. Mahesh with another man allegedly assaulted the doctor brutally with a knife (stab on the back) and sickle (cut injuries over abdomen, chest and neck) and the doctor died on the spot. The police have arrested four people so far.

The deceased doctor's spouse is Professor Mr. Thirugnanasambandam (Cell no: 94422 20080) and her son and daughter are also doctors. Their residential address is: 3 Mile, Medical College Road, Thoothukudi - 628 008, Tamil Nadu.

A state-wide shutdown was called by the IMA (Tamil Nadu Branch) on Thursday, 5 January 2012.

Law cannot be taken over by anybody to satisfy the grievances against professionals who render services with good faith and belief. We request the local authorities to take exemplary action against the miscreants.

We condemn the brutal killing of Dr. Sethulakshmi at Tuticorin.
"May her soul rest in peace".
