Respected Chief Guest Dr. Umesh Chandra Sharma founder Vice Chancellor of Shrimantha Shankara Deva University of Health Sciences, dignitaries on the dias, distinguished invitees, past presidents, distinguished guests (GC) members, delegates, media persons, representatives from the industry, ladies and gentlemen.

I warmly welcome all the distinguished delegates at the 61 st Annual Conference of our Society. I extend special welcome to overseas delegates for participating in the conference.

It is a great pleasure to be with you this evening and inaugurate the conference.

The year 2013 was eventful. We are moving in the right direction, but we need to move faster. During the past 1 year I attended zonal, state conferences and Continuing Medical Educations and found that the conferences were organised and attended well. I had the opportunity to meet large number of members and was happy to interact with them.

A wise ruler is one who knows how to develop the resources of his kingdom, how to collect and guard his revenues and how to spend them wisely. Putting the ceiling limit on travel expenses, starting the e-journal were in this direction only.

I am happy to see the free and fair elections of our Society. Family Benevolent fund is getting merged with the National Headquarters (HQ). And elections for the office bearers are going to be held for maintaining this fund. We have been allotted land in Greater Noida by Uttar Pradesh Government for our Indian Society of Anaesthesiologists (ISA) HQ at Government institutional rate. The decision of how much we should take will be taken in the General Body meeting.

General body is the supreme organ of our democratic society that reflects the collective will of the members. Today, more than ever before, a tremendous responsibility rests on our GC to safe guard and protect the interest of the society and its members. There are six metastasing cancers because of low trust in the society. They are criticising, complaining, comparing, competing, contending and cynicism. Resolving differences and reconciling different viewpoints are what the GC and President do on a daily basis apart from the academic, administrative and financial activities of the society. This is the job Hon. Secretary, Maj Bhimeshwar has done with outstanding success in many instances.

I congratulate Dr. Akhil Chandra Bora, Dr. Ajit Deka, Dr. Dwipul Bora, Dr. Hitesh Samanth and the aggressive and dynamic organising Secretary Dr. Rajib Bhattacharya for organising this excellent conference which all of us will cherish for a long time to come.

On behalf of our society I thank the Principal, Guwahati Medical College for permitting us to use this premises for our conference.

I wish you all success in your scientific deliberations and also look forward to your valuable recommendations and constructive suggestions for improvement of our society.

Wish you all a very happy and prosperous new year.

Long live ISA

Thank you and Jai Hind
