This book is a very good effort by Mohan Gurjar who has enlisted contributions from over 100 authors for 61 chapters on Intensive Care Unit (ICU) procedures under five broad sections. The editing is quite satisfactory for the nascent critical care publications field from India and is world class.
The book covers virtually all procedures in the ICU, both the routine ones as well as the most advanced to challenging ones. The topics are divided into sections on airway and respiratory procedures, vascular and cardiac procedures, neurological procedures, gastrointestinal, abdominal and genitourinary procedures and a final section, to include unclassified ones.
The editor has made this book comprehensive not only in terms of the topics covered but also in terms of the details of each procedure. Each chapter starts with the most basic procedures in the field followed by the discussion on advanced procedures, in a nice flow down.
The authors have largely followed a uniform pattern in the chapters, and it is easier for the reader to 'read-through' the chapters very easily. This reflects good coordination between the authors and the editor.
Simple procedures such as patient positioning, airway manoeuvres, tourniquet application as well as invasive procedures such as intubation, lumbar puncture, ventricular drainage and pericardial drainage are all discussed. Some procedures such as nerve and muscle biopsy may not have a routine application, but their inclusion completes the list and helps make the book a one-stop access for all ICU procedures. Managing needle stick injury in the ICU is a very important part of safe practice for the ICU personnel, which is lucidly described in one of the sections. Self-protection and prevention of cross-contamination are an important part of safe practice in medicine.
The highlight of the book is the quality illustration of most of the procedures. Good quality photographs of the procedures in manikins/models and in volunteers accompany many articles. The anatomical illustrations and considerations are very useful in understanding the procedures.
It is difficult to find any uncovered areas. Use of ultrasound for some procedures is discussed, but I feel use of echocardiography and ultrasound as aides to ICU procedures may be added as a separate chapter.
Majority of the chapters are built up on proper citations of important references; the editor needs to be congratulated in this aspect as improper and inadequate referencing separates a quality publication from other run of the mill publications. Still, some chapters have failed to cite evidences within the text, but only have a list of publications under 'Suggested Reading.' I expect the editor to cover this limitation and also add updated references not seen in some chapters.
The book will be very useful to the trainees, consultants, nurses and the technical personnel in the ICU. The book can be easily recommended for libraries. I give a score of 7/10 for the effort.
