Greetings from the ISA National President
Respected Madam Dr. Snehlata Deshpande, Vice Chanceller of Mumbai University (formerly), Chief Guest of today's function, Padmabhushan Dr. Hiranandani, Guest of honour , dignitaries on and off the dais, former presidents of the ISA, lifetime achievement awardees, GC members, past secretaries, past treasurers, invitees, fellow members of the ISA, members of the industry, members of the media, ladies and gentlemen.
On the behalf of the ISACON 2011 organizing committee I extend a warm welcome to all for the inaugural function of the 59 th NATIONAL CONFERENCE OF THE INDIAN SOCIETY OF ANAESTHESIOLOGISTS at Mumbai. As President of the Society, I salute all those visionaries and pioneers, whose continued efforts contributed to the present shape of our esteemed society. The ISA was born on 30 December 1947, at Mumbai. The first annual conference of the ISA was held on 23 and 24 December 1949 through the combined surgical and obstetric society of India at Bombay (Mumbai). Today, I am standing on this podium where the ISA was born 64 years back with 19 members and now has grown to approximately 18,000 members. I welcome you all once again. First of all with folded hands I apologize to all the members of the ISA who could not attend this Kumbhmela of anaesthesiologists. This is a good sign of the progress of the Society that registrations unexpectedly were more than double the last conference held. I really regret the inconvenience caused to the members during this unprecedented scientific extravaganza.
Our association has shown phenomenal growth and I am glad to announce that our society is the second largest society in the world, with 26 state branches and 124 city branches. We are going to introduce a zonal system in our governing body in the forthcoming years.
Family Benevolent Fund
Performing excellently for the benefit of anaesthesiologists' families, our vibrant and dynamic Hon. Sec. Dr SSC Chakrarao has put the family benevolent fund onto the right path. Now we want to give a deceased anaesthetist's family a minimum of Rs 15 lakhs. I personally request all the state and city branch secretaries to promote this scheme.
Medical Education And Ica
The uniformity of the standard of practice is not maintained in the country, hence ISA started the Indian College of Anaesthesiologists (ICA) three years back. The third conference of the ICA was held at the Himalayan Institute of Medical Sciences, Dehradun on 19 and 20 November 2011. The yearbook Anaesthesiology 2011 was released on this occasion. Honorary fellowship of the Indian College was awarded for the first time. The ISA will sponsor short-term specialty training programs for members. Teaching institutions and corporate hospitals are invited to facilitate this program. Anaesthesiology is a rapidly growing specialty and the knowledge base pertaining to the field is increasing by leaps and bounds. We have awarded support to 11 ISA-sponsored CMEs conducted in different parts of the country. Of these seven CMEs were conducted this year and the remaining four will be conducted before March 2012.
Following the perseverance of the editorial team headed by Dr. S.S. Harsoor to stick to very high global standards, IJA is now recognized as one of the top international journals in the field of Anaesthesiology and Critical Care. The Industry needs to recognize the potential of IJA as the only tool to reach out to every corner of our country uniformly, and at the same time we expect their support to the Anaesthesia community for the mutual growth.
It is the earnest desire of the ISA that no member is deprived of the opportunity to access the latest in the field of Anaesthesiology through IJA. Hence the ISA has decided to distribute a soft copy of the IJA to members who did not get the Print version of IJA during ISACON. The online version of IJA at www.ijaweb.org is accessed by more than 36000 viewers every month and more articles are now cited in the World Anaesthesia literature. The ISA and IJA are committed to the highest standard of ethics in Anaesthesia practice and all efforts are made to prevent frauds in scientific publications.
The ISA now has a new interactive website "www.isanew.in" which is designed by none other than our own anaesthesiologist from Indore, Dr. Subodh Chaturvedhi. Inaugurated by the President on 4 h December it is quite informative and helpful, especially to youngsters. A legal cell has also been included for help on medico-legal issues.
Saarc and World Federation of Society of Anaesthesiologists
Between 26-28 August 2011, we successfully hosted the 9 th Congress of the SAARC Association of Anaesthesiologists at Bengaluru. Several milestones were achieved during this conference. It is a matter of pride for the ISA that it took the lead in preparing the consensus guidelines for patient safety; the Bengaluru declaration aimed at enhancing patient safety in anaesthesiology in the SAARC region and it was signed by all the Heads of the SAARC Anaesthesia Association. A committed team of WFSA officials under the leadership of President Angela Enright, Secretary David Wilkinson, and the Educational Committee Chairman met the ISA officials at Bengaluru. All the pending issues between ISA and WFSA were resolved positively. The meeting ended with the motto that we shall work together for the service of humanity and will pay the WFSA membership share according to our active member strength. The President ISA was elected unanimously as The President of SAARC- Association of Anaesthesiologists for 2011-2013 period. Amendments to byelaws will be introduced in the Annual General Body Meeting to smoothen the administration. The ISA is a non-profitable, charitable, educational, and professional society registered under the Societies Registration Act. The income tax problem dodging the ISA for the last few years was finally settled this year with the continuous efforts of our past President Dr. J. Ranganathan, Dr. Rangaachari past treasurer, Hon. secretary Dr. S.S.C. Chakrarao , Hon. treasurer Dr. B.B. Mishra, past office-bearers, and auditor Mr. Subramaniyan.
It is time to admit that a lot many of our dreams remain unfulfilled. I am sure the future governing body will complete our pending work. I shall continue to render my humble services to the Society whenever needed and in any capacity.
The organizing committee has worked hard to make this academic mega-event a grand success. I am sure all of you will enjoy the famous Maharashtrian hospitality along with a good academic feast.
It is worth reminding ourselves that what happens today will be a part of our history tomorrow. We should stand back and view the actions and decisions of today in the light of our past.
Friends, the organizing committee has tried its best to make your stay comfortable and enjoyable. If there have been any shortcomings, as President of the Society I take full responsibility. At the end, my heartfelt thanks to all of you for unanimously offering me the unique status of the highest Chair and honour of both the ISA and SAARC-AA at the same time.
Long Live the ISA
